Escape the Horror that Awaits You in These Surprisingly Atmospheric Casual Games

Escape games are usually thought of as light puzzle fun, but a handful of browser classics proved the format could be properly unnerving. These seven point and click escapes trade cosy rooms for haunted manors, endless nightmares and doomed starships, and every one of them is worth a play with the lights off.

Ghostscape

Psionic's Ghostscape casts you as a seasoned paranormal investigator who simply can't leave the occult alone. Your latest case is a haunted manor whose residents have vanished, and it's up to you to find out why. Furniture shifts when your back is turned, apparitions appear without warning and old diary pages hint at rituals best left undisturbed. Bring your camera, because the real goal is proof: photograph the strange events, gather the evidence and get out in one piece with a story nobody can dismiss.

Ghostscape is one of many free ghost hunting games (see ghosthuntinggame.com for more).

The sequel moves the investigation to a remote cabin in the woods, a place that feels stuck in another decade, and to the mystery of the elderly man who lived there. Something dark is never far away, so careful exploration matters. As before, your camera lets you capture paranormal activity, and scattered diary entries fill in the backstory. You can rush to the exit if you like, but players who search every corner are rewarded with a better ending.

Deep Sleep

Scriptwelder built Deep Sleep for the 10th Casual Gameplay Design Competition, and it remains one of the most memorable entries. You are trapped inside a dream that has curdled into a nightmare, and something in the depths of your own mind is determined to keep you there. Solve its surreal puzzles and stay ahead of what is following you, because waking up is the only way out and failure means living the nightmare on repeat.

The follow up picks up after you thought you had woken. Now fixated on lucid dreaming and doubting your own sanity, you go looking for answers in a library, only to learn that the way out lies further down rather than up. Going deeper means facing the presence that hunts you through your dreams, and it has no intention of letting you escape.

The third chapter of Scriptwelder's dream trilogy pushes towards the end of the story. Everything you learned in the first two games leads here, to the lowest level of the dream world, where the creatures guarding it are more dangerous than ever. Outthink them, keep moving and you might finally wake up for good.

Don't Escape 2

Scriptwelder flips the escape formula on its head here: instead of getting out, you need to keep something from getting in. Two weeks into a zombie outbreak, a horde is heading for the building where you and your fellow survivors are sheltering. You have until sunset to scavenge supplies and fortify the place, and every decision about how to spend that time counts.

The series heads into space for its third outing. You come round aboard a drifting starship with no memory of what happened, alarms blaring, a countdown running and the rest of the crew nowhere to be seen. With roughly an hour of air left and the ship reporting an intruder on board, you have to explore, make repairs and survive long enough for someone to answer your distress call.
